In this tutorial we will learn about the concepts, tools and workflows for utilizing the Ptex texture mapping system inside MARI. We’ll get started with this course by taking a few moments to understand what Ptex texture mapping is and why it may be important to our production pipelines. From here, we’ll learn about topics like how to create Ptex projects in MARI, the different methods of creating resolution for Ptex project, and painting workflows for Ptex. We’ll wrap things up by learning how to import our Ptex textures into and export them out of MARI. In this course we will talk about important concepts and workflow ideas to keep in mind as you create vehicle textures in MARI. Welcome to the Professional Series for Texturing Military Vehicles in MARI, an advanced learning guide for skilled artists brought to you by Digital-Tutors, the world’s largest online CG training library. This course was designed to help develop your MARI workflows, and give you some concepts to keep in mind as you go through the process of painting texture maps for your military vehicles. The objectives for this fast-paced course include looking at several different workflows and techniques for texturing a military transport. These concepts include using a layer-based approach to add flexibility to your textures and using snapshots to create variation. We won't be going step by step through an entire project, but rather talk in broad terms about some of the best ways to work and options you have for dealing with issues that may come up. Before we start, I recommend you have experience using MARI as we cover a lot of information in a shorter span of time. If you’re an artist new to MARI, I recommend you check out Establishing a Solid Foundation in MARI first. From there you can look at the intermediate step-by-step project based courses that will take you through the entire process.
In this MARI tutorial we will learn about hand painting textures in MARI for a character model. We’ll begin this process by learning some basics about MARI. Things like bringing in geometry, creating channels and shaders and understanding the concept of the paint buffer. Next we'll begin painting our character by laying down a base color and then building some variation on top of that. We'll walk step by step through adding paint detail on top of paint detail until we end up with our finished painting. We'll wrap this course up by learning a little about color correction and then how to export our textures out of MARI. After completing this tutorial, you will have enough knowledge of this powerful texture painting application to begin painting your own characters without the use of photographs.
When it comes to creating textures for a project, sometimes UV maps just aren’t available for an asset. Ptex provides a wonderful solution to this problem by allowing us to paint textures on each face without the use of UVs. In addition, MARI 2.0’s true layer-based painting workflow makes creating these textures an absolute joy. To get started with this project we will learn how to create our Ptex project in MARI using an existing .obj file. From here we will begin the process of creating selection groups to help us target areas for paint. Next we will gradually work though both base textures and eventually some wonderful details for our robot. Along the way, we will learn about various workflow tips and tricks for working in MARI 2.0 including setting up channels for each of our texture maps, painting with images and both projection and layer masking. We will really flex MARI’s new layer system in this training, and utilize not only procedural layers and adjustment layers but also mask groups. After going through this tutorial, not only will you have a fully textured asset but you will also have learned a good deal about the powerful features that have been packed into MARI 2.0.
